WMOW000006Anna Maria Sibylla Merian (Frankfurt am Main, April 2, 1647 - Amsterdam, January 13, 1717) was a German artist and entomologist who studied plants and insects and made detailed drawings of them. She never used her first name Anna in her publications. Her observations and documentation of the metamorphosis from caterpillars to butterflies are an important, if not generally known, contribution to entomology.
The Teylers Museum in Haarlem has a number of works by Merian in the collection. The museum webhsop mainly has the image: Three tulips often used for all beautiful original products, which can also be found in all kinds of museum shops in the Netherlands and abroad.
