Painted as a trompe-l'œil, the small-format picture shows a goldfinch. The bird is sitting in front of a plain grey lidded box, which - supported by two brackets - is fixed to the wall. It is tethered to the upper of the two perches around the box by a thin long chain attached to its right foot. Painted from the bottom view, it was intended to be fixed above the viewer's head height.
